The Beginnings and Endings of Things

Here in Room 10 we have been working on understanding the meanings of different prefixes.
This helps us to understand what we are reading and how to include these words in our story writing.

For example:

Re ( means to do again)

Re + read = reread  ( read that sentence again)

We found the prefix and the base word, then discussed how adding a prefix changes the meaning of the base word.

Lately we have also been looking at suffixes too.

For example:

ful ( full of)

cheer + ful = colour full ( full of good cheer)

Here is an activity we did to make the words. We needed to read out work back to check it made sense, then out some of these words into an oral sentence with a partner.

Fair Shares

Over the past week we have been working on identifying fractions of a region and learning how to make 'fair shares'

In pairs we had to work out how to cut  shapes into different parts to represent a given fraction.

First of all we found it challenging to make our parts an equal share and deciding the best way to cut up the shapes.

Once we tried to solve problems such as: There are 3 children who need to share a pizza. How many pieces will they get?

The children realised that the idea of a 'fair share' was extremely important!

The children loved how they could quickly try out different ideas by rearranging the Playdough.

Too Cute!

Sam and Jenny came to school with some very special visitors this week.
Here are some clues...

They have four furry legs

One twitchy nose

Two fluffy, floppy ears

Can you guess?

Thats right, rabbits!!

Jenny taught the children how to hold the rabbits carefully. We learned that a boy rabbit is called a buck, a girl rabbit is called a doe and a baby rabbit is called a kit.
Jenny told us that rabbits can have between 6 and 9 babies at a time! 

Once it was time for little rabbits to catch up on their beauty sleep, we completed a rabbit themed word find and watched some clips on youtube about rabbits. 
It was a 'hopping' good day!!

Room 10 children visited MOTAT where they enjoyed a fun day of learning and discovery!

We attended the Colonial Kitchen Chemistry session where we learned about non-reversible and reversible changes. We found out that changing some things from a liquid to a solid might mean that it cannot be reversed by heating or cooling, unlike water which can be reversed.

We made butter by getting into groups. We noticed how the cream changed into whipped cream initially, then into butter where we had some liquid left behind called buttermilk.

Afterwards our MOTAT educator invited us to explore some of the household tools and items that were used in everyday life.
The children were surprised to hear how much chores children of their age had to do during the Victorian era!
We were lucky enough to try some of these items out. the most popular was the yoke and buckets that were used to collect river water for the house. The boys wanted to test of they were up for the job!

One of the most interesting innovations was the 'brick fridge'. This was used to keep items cool as there was no electricity then.
Parents had fun identifying the items on the treasure table. Some of these were recognised as tools Grandparents ( children's great grandparents!) used and still had in their kitchens today.
It just goes to show how well some things were made 100's of years ago!

Our Educator demonstrated how to make a soft cheese ( like ricotta or cottage cheese) by heating the milk and adding a kitchen acid such as vinegar. We watched as the milk and vinegar separated to form curds (cheese) and whey (liquid). This was stinky and the children were not sure they liked the idea of trying it! However our educator reminded us that you could not be that fussy back then as food was limited. You had to grow and make your own food. No supermarkets for the Victorians!

We took out butter and cheese back to school. We are hoping to make bread this week so we can experience how the Victorians did it and to explore what role yeast plays in making bread.

Wear your seat belt before you hit the track!

Constable Gareth came to tell us about how to wear our seat belts correctly.
We looked at correct and incorrect ways to wear them. 
Constable Gareth measured us with his special seat belt height chart and wrote how tall we were.
We learned that you have to be at least 148cm tall to stop wearing a booster seat.
Everybody quickly worked out that we all have to remain booster seats for a while!

Hokey Pokey - What a Gas!

As part of our Science Rotation we are learning about the states of matter and how these can change depending on whether they are heated or cooled.

In Room 10 we decided to carry out an experiment.
We did what good scientists do by recoding our predictions before carrying out the experiment and then made observations during the process.

Here we are...

We measured our ingredients to ensure our experiment had the best chance of success.

We observed the changes we saw taking place before our eyes. The ingredients melted and bubbles were forming, once we added the baking soda we were surprised to see how much the mixture was expanding!

The Science: The bicarbonate of soda breaks down with heat to release carbon dioxide gas. The gas causes the sugar and syrup mixture froth and  bubble. The bubbles become trapped in the mixture and set there.

We also noticed a change once the hokey pokey had cooled. It changed into a hard and crunchy substance.

I wonder what new ideas we will explore during next week's rotation!

What state are we in?

And so began our investigation into States of Matter, boldly going where man has definitely gone before, but not Room 10!!

We watched a cool song about States of Matter.

Then we had to think of examples of solids, liquids  and gases.

To help us understand the science, we played a game where Miss Pulman shouted out a solid, liquid or gas and we had to show what the particles were doing in a chosen state with our bodies

As part of learning to speak on topic and using a clear reading voice we tried a new idea.

During news time we were given a talking strip. It looked like this.

We got into pairs and took turns to share our news.
This exercise also helped us to structure our sentences and speak with greater formality. This will certainly support us when we read our speeches later on this term!

Who is that walking on my bridge?

Today we did something a little different for reading.
We listened to Miss Pulman as she retold the story of the Billy Goat's Gruff. She used different voices for the characters to make her presentation interesting and expressive. 

Now it was our turn to try.

We made a scene board complete with an arching bridge, then added the characters.
In pairs we told the story, using a mean and cruel voice for the troll, a teeny, tiny voice for the little goat, a sensible, clever voice for the big goat and a booming voice for the GREAT BIG BILLY GOAT GRUFF.

As you can see it was a lot of fun, we loved performing this at home too - or so they tell me!

Collaboration Stations with Room 17

We are a lucky bunch here in Room 10!
Mrs Slee and Miss Pulman thought it would be a great idea for our two classes to collaborate on creating a keynote presentation.
Our tech experts ( that is Room 17 children) came over to Room 10 to show us how to create a presentation using a keynote. This involved learning how to:
- find the right icon
- create a text box
- write text
- bold or enlarge text
- search for a picture to support our sound focus ( long e sound - e, ee, ea)
- copy and paste picture into keynote
- highlight the long ee sound in the word

After our experts had taught us, Room 10 children had to follow the steps.

Miss Pulman never stops learning too!

We learned so much from our buddies. Thank you Room 17!!

Hot Chocolate on P.J Day

The best way to celebrate the winter chills is by snuggling into a comfy pair of jammies and a cup of hot chocolate!

We looked at the ingredients and discussed the steps on how to make a hot chocolate ( with the adults in charge of the hot plates).

This is what we did

1. Write your name on your cup

2. Put a heaped teaspoonful of hot chocolate powder

3. Get an adult to heat around 300 mls of milk

4. Pour this onto the cup and stir until the powder is dissolved

5. Plop a couple of marshmallows in

6. Let Miss Pulman squirt the squishy cream on top

7. Make your self a milky moustache!!
